In August of 2003, the Big Rapids Housing Commission, along with the Downtown Business Association and the Mecosta County Chamber of Commerce sponored a community celebration honoring the restoration of the Fairman-Nisbett buildings.
The public response was extremely enthusiastic and some viewed this as an opportunity to be part of the rejuvenation of the downtown business district. For some it even sparked their entrepreneurial spirit.
Kathy Straley, along with her partners, Fran Ward, Muggs Ward and Beth Ranger, decided the time was right for Fairman's Apparel, a women's clothing shop, to open.
The timing of this business venture was further enhanced because the corner store located in the Fairman Block was vacant and ready to rent. Ferdinand Fairman, builder of the Fairman Block in 1880, is the great-grandfather of Fran and the great-great-grandfather of Kathy, Beth and Muggs' husband, Joe Ward.
Fairman's Apparel offers quality clothing at reasonable prices. We specialize in women's apparel.
Our store has been in business since February, 2004. We are located in historic Downtown Big Rapids, MI. Our business hours are Monday through Friday 10:00am - 5:30pm, and Saturday 10:00am - 4:00pm.
It is our goal to provide friendly and knowledgeable customer service in a comfortable atmosphere.
